What was Singapore like before 1819

From examining the source (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sang_Nila_Utama) , it tells us how Sang Nila Utama founded and become the first ruler of Singapore.In the source,it says that "He established diplomatic ties with China,and was officially recognised as the ruler of Singapore by an envoy of the Chinese emperor in 1366." This shows what Sang Nila Utama did for the peole and had been great ruler.
Therefore, I can conclude that Singapore had made friends and had ties with other countries before 1819.
